Background:
- With effect from 1 July 2004, all 108 contracting governments to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Safety of Life at Sea Convention (SOLAS) had to comply with the new IMO International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code. The Code sets out strict security requirements for all ports engaged in international maritime traffic. Failure to comply with the Code has already resulted in some ships being barred from entry into the ports of some countries.
