Traffic Data Collection and Analysis Course
Introduction:
The objective of this course is to facilitate collaboration between traffic data collection personnel and pavement engineering professionals in the formulation of traffic data collection plans, data management, and analysis.
From a pavement engineering standpoint, traffic data typically serve as a crucial external data component. Pavement professionals often perceive traffic data as information that needs to be gathered and shared with others. Therefore, it is essential for pavement professionals to have an understanding of how traffic data are collected and managed in order to ensure their reliability.
Course Objectives:
The purpose of this course is to introduce the new developments in traffic data collection and management and to review the main aspects of collecting, managing, and utilizing traffic data for pavement engineering applications. Emphasis will be placed on the new developments in traffic data collection, as presented in the FHWA Traffic Monitoring Guide (TMG), and the new traffic data needs to be introduced by the M-E PDG procedure. The course will provide an overview of these guidelines and address how to accommodate new traffic data requirements under the budgetary constraints. At the end of the course, you will have a clear understanding of the new traffic data requirements and how they affect traffic data collection, analysis, and use. You will receive a notebook with a complete set of all the slides presented in the class, plus additional course references for more detailed reading.
Who Should Attend?
This course is designed for highway agency personnel involved in traffic data collection and pavement design. To obtain a better understanding of the information covered in this course and to make it easier to incorporate it into your existing traffic program, we highly recommend that at last one person from your agency’s traffic data collection group and one person from your agency’s pavement design group attend this course.
